Nineteenth Fight – Phetngamta Jit Aree Gym

I fought Phet in my 14th fight and lost to her in a technical game.  For this fight I knew I had to put my strength on her and I got better with that as the fight goes on, but I definitely need to get more aggressive earlier in fights – still a slow starter.

My corner was pretty astonished at the resulting decision of this fight and I was told that the draw was because I’m scheduled to fight her again on the 13th and they want a third fight.  I’m not clear how my winning would have in any way obstructed a third fight happening, but I also don’t think I outright won this fight, even if a lot of the audience and all of my camp felt that way.  I won fourth and fifth, which are important rounds, but if I’d fought round three the way I fought the last two I think it would have been mine without question.

Rematch again on the 13th of July.  Much respect to my opponent – she’s a good fighter and I expect our next match will be nasty.  She was throwing elbows (albeit ineffectively) in this fight and I kneed her head more than once (also ineffectively since the ref broke it and she fought on – I think if I’d been more decisive or brought the attack up during those knees he wouldn’t have broken it, but me continuing to knee her head without knocking her out – like a slow bludgeoning – would have been gross).  We’re both going to be coming into this next fight with the intention of getting square.

Your most exciting match yet–both of you look like you want to fight! I can see a lot of progress you have made, putting into practice your training. You move in quickly, and return blows faster. There are fewer times when you kick from too far away. I’ll bet many people will be eager to see another fight between you two. Great work, Sylvie!

Good job. Congratulations. You had much more control of the fight than last time.

My favorite parts from you was in the beginning of the 5th round when you moved forward with two jabs and then landed a solid cross. Also, late in the 3rd round you did a high front kick and followed with a jab and a hook. I think the jab and the hook connected, but they did not have enough behind them to do any damage–but they could have.

So, I think these attacks were effective because they were combos and not single attacks. She is experienced enough, and fast enough that she can move away from any single attack of yours. So, I think you need fast combos to allow you close the distance and penetrate her defenses.

What I like about how she fights is that she has good fast counters. Lots of times, she waits for you to throw your rear kick and then throws hers before you have a chance to fully reset. You should be able to do this to her off of her teeps. (Although it would be somewhat different because it’s a teep.)

My two cents for you in a nutshell: combos and counters.

These were my thoughts exactly. I’d actually worked on kicking her off of her teep (parrying the teep and stepping in for a right power kick) and I didn’t get it together in this fight. She realized early on that her teep approach from last time wasn’t going to work this time and she started forsaking the kicks for counters.

I was trying to trigger her counters a couple of times by faking a step in, but my fakes weren’t convincing enough. Better work on that more.

Thanks for the advice and I really appreciate your support. I expect to have a much better fight – and a clear victory – in our rematch on the 13th.

Yeah. And she did more counters with punches (and elbows) rather than the rear kick this time. She might try to do even more of a counterpunching and counter-elbow game next time since you were effective at catching her kick and dumping her.

With your strength and knees on the inside and catching kicks on the outside, you are definitely limiting her options.
